Habitat Restoration Event (Invasive Plant Removal)

The mission of Friends of Forest Hill Park is to encourage and safeguard responsible use and care of the Park in collaboration with the City of Richmond.
Event Description: We will pull/cut invasive non-native plants, much of it English ivy. These plants are removed because nvasive plants outcompete native plants, and native plants provide food, protection, and places to reproduce and live for native birds, insects, and mammals.
Time Commitment: Up to 2 hours. Please arrive BEFORE the start time.
What to Bring: Work gloves if you have them. No open-toed footwear due to possibility of poison ivy.
Weather: We will work unless there's severe weather or heavy rain.
Location: December we will meet at the Stone House, which is near the corner of 41st St. and Springhill Ave.

Chimborazo Native Food Forest Work Day
Brief Organizational Description:
Richmond Grows Gardens helps community gardens cultivate community in city spaces with plants to achieve food access and environmental resilience.
Chimborazo's Native food forest is a project to establish a native community orchard and grassland habitat in Chimborazo Park that is both ecologically diverse and edible to humans. Plantings in the garden include American hazelnut, plums, serviceberry, persimmon, elderberry, and Mulberry along with many native grass species.
Volunteers activties may include tree planting, weeding, mulching, and weed wacking.

This phase of the project involves clearing out areas to be reseeded and replanted with natives. As a volunteer, you will assist us in clearing these areas by removing English Ivy.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers will be removing English Ivy by hand. Removal will include bending and kneeling. For anyone who is interested in helping, but uncomfortable with bending and kneeling, please reach out before the workday. We can easily accommodate by having you in our tree ivy removal group.

With the goal to not only create new public greenspaces, but also to maintain them, we need volunteers now more than ever. With sustainability at the heart of our maintenance mission we hope you will join us in our ongoing effort to create a greener, more sustainable Richmond.
This group works directly with our horticultural consultant on ongoing garden maintenance such as, weeding, pruning, deadheading, transplanting, etc. You do not need to be able to participate every week or for the entire morning to volunteer.

Gilpin Community Garden Workday

Gilpin Community Garden is a public green space that grew out of the vision of Lillie Estes and is one of four growing sites in the Food Justice Corridor. Community beds are open to anyone that is interested in learning and participating; grow and take what you can.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
During this event we will focus on saving and packaging seeds, harvesting and packaging herbs from the Angel Circle, stalking blackberries. We will also prune trees, clear and solarize behind the shed, and apply mulch to the rest of the garden.

Oak Grove Tree Planting

Join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for a tree planting at Oak Grove Neighborhood Planting.
Volunteers will work together to plant a variety of medium-sized trees. Most trees will be in 7–15-gallon pots, so they are easy for volunteers to move. The trees will cool our city, filter air and water pollution, stabilize soil to reduce erosion and reduce carbon emissions.
No prior experience is necessary! We will provide all tools, gloves, and instructions needed for a successful planting. Wear weather-appropriate clothes, sturdy shoes, and bring your own water bottle. Please register in advance so we can bring the appropriate number of tools.
Please keep in mind that we have limited the number of volunteers who can participate in this event. If you find that your schedule or health prevents you from being able to attend, please notify us immediately so we can recruit another volunteer in your place.

Bellemeade Park Hillside Meadow Planting

Join Parks Rec, Friends of Bellemeade, and Local Ecotype Richmond Native (LERN) to establish a native meadow at Bellemeade Park on the hillside above the ballfield. We will be planting several thousand native plugs provided by LERN. Meet at the Krouse St entrance to the park at the top of the hill. Parking available on Krouse St, Royal Ave, and inside the park.
Come prepared to be kneeling and digging in the dirt. Gloves, tools, and water provided. The hillside is covered in a coco coir erosion control matting so some volunteers will need to be comfortable using box cutters to cut holes in the matting to plant.

Birdhouse November Workday
Join us in the Birdhouse Community Garden on Saturday, November 2nd between 9am - 12pm for the last Community Work Day of the season! (Located at 1507 Grayland Ave behind the gazebo, next to the pool.)
This won't be the final time we gather as a group this year - we will have a community garden planning session in December! Saturday is just the final work day of the 2024 calendar year. Be on the lookout for information about the December Planning session over the next few weeks.
On Saturday, we will have all of the tools you need to succeed (thank you, RVA ToolBank!) as well as light snacks and water. Just bring yourself and maybe a friend or two! Closed toed shoes and clothes you can get messy/paint on are encouraged.
Planned activities for Saturday include:
-Prepping the garden for Winter
-Pulling out spent plants
-Planting garlic and some cover crops
-Compost management
-Finish sealing the Greenhouse with Silicone
-Finish installing the rope-rail system on the Greenhouse platform

Brief Organizational Description:
Happily Natural Day promotes holistic health, wellness and social change through transformation of the built environment for food justice and climate resiliency.
Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Sankofa Community Orchard is a two acre food justice and climate resiliency demonstration. Volunteers help steward community food growing, soil building, composting, tree planting and native plant planting.
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers will assist with planting veggies, trees, and fruiting shrubs. As Sankofa expands in size, volunteers will also help with establishing new garden beds. There may be weeding and replanting of perennial flowers in our pollinator garden and occasional building of compost bins, trellis systems, or even helping to install low tunnels or greenhouses to extend our growing season.
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
No experience necessary!
Time Commitment:
Thursdays from 11am - 1pm (unless it is raining or snowing)
Saturdays from 1pm - 3pm (unless it is raining or snowing)
Other Information (if applicable):
Please dress appropriately for gardening activities! Bring gloves if you can!

Gilpin Community Garden Workday
During this volunteer day event we will focus on pulling weeds, removing sunflower stalks, mulching the rows, weeding the herb circle and pruning the Blackberries. Also we will weed the “Lilies for Lily” area and apply mulch!

Broad Rock Community Garden Volunteer Workday
Brief Organizational Description:
Beautifying the space that is Broad Rock Community Garden for the neighborhood to use and enjoy!
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Responsibilities may vary.
Most of the time we will be Weeding, mulching, picking up trash, and planting.
Responsibilites may also include:
Prunning and thinning fruit trees
Time Commitment:
11am - 1pm every sunday unless it's raining
Other Information (if applicable):
There are no water fountains or bathrooms nearby
please bring your own water

Chimborazo Native Foods Project Workday

Brief Organizational Description:
Chimborazo Native Foods is a community garden located in the east end of Richmond VA. They are commited to clearing out invasive plants and replacing them with natives!
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Volunteers will assist with laying out seed mix with cover crops and native grassland species in order to establish a native grassland on a hillside.
This mix will be covered with coconut coir matting, which volunteers will also assit in rolling out and decuring with stakes.
The work will be done on a sloped area with a good deal of holes, so Closed toe shoes are mandatory, and boots are highly recommended.
Water will be provided, but please a bottle.

Location is in the park at the bottem of the hill near the dog park.
Parking is at the top of the hill and you'll need to walk down.
